2010 National Midyear Convention

PSSE Midyear Convention held at Clark, Pampanga on 29-31 July 2010

A successful mid-year convention was held at Stotsenberg Hotel on 29-31 July 2010 with an impressive attendance of about 260 participants and 18 exhibitors. With the theme, “Working Together for a Clean, Safe and Healthy Environment”, this event launched the specialization program for sanitary engineers in recognition of the vast concerns of sanitary engineering. Four of these specialty areas were initially introduced through presentation of papers and sharing of experiences in simultaneous sessions. These were water and wastewater management, public health engineering, solid waste management and building systems and fire protection.

The Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH), Dr. Enrique T. Ona, delivered  his message through his representative Dr. Jaime Lagahid, Director of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control. He underscored the public health problems in the Philippines which could be addressed by sanitary engineering solutions and stressed the role of sanitary engineers (SE) in public health.  In his concluding remarks, online prescriptions he expressed the DOH support to  the activities of the sanitary engineering profession which he considered essential in the attainment of health sector goals. He also highlighted that the SE profession is a critical partner of the Department of Health’s vision of “Health for all Filipinos.

The Professional Regulation Commission through Engr. Alfredo Espino, SE Board examiner, also sent a message regarding the current decreasing trend of SE board passers as well as diminishing numbers of examinees. Because of these issues, there were clarifications from the participants on the following: quality and type of board exam questions; matching of  schools’ SE curriculum and SE board exam syllabi; and references used by PRC for the board exam. PRC will review these issues affecting the board exam results and will provide feedback in the next SE convention.

The PSSE looks forward to another equally engaging and productive National Annual Convention on November 2010.
